What is the meaning of play for the child? What is the value of spontaneous free play in early childhood? What are the pedagogical decisions and choices of early childhood educators in creating environments and participating in spontaneous free play? The increasingly formalized environments of early childhood challenge traditional approaches to “learning through play.” In this talk we will consider diverse perspectives on the nature and value of play in its broadest sense, as a starting point for thinking differently about play and playful approaches to teaching and learning in early childhood care and education.
